Welcome to Fitness to Practise: What You Need to Know

If a concern has been raised about your practice, or you simply want to understand the system that governs your registration, the uncertainty is often the hardest part. Not knowing what happens next, who is involved, or what is realistic to expect makes an already difficult situation feel worse than it needs to.

This course is the map. It explains what fitness to practise actually means, how the process truly works across the UK’s healthcare regulators, what to do in the first days after a concern is raised, who can help you, and what the range of outcomes actually looks like. It does not teach the specific skills of writing a reflective account or building a remediation plan, those are covered fully in the other courses in this series. This course makes sure you understand the whole landscape first, so that whichever specific skill you need next makes sense in context.

By the end of this course you will be able to

  1. Explain what fitness to practise means and why the system exists
  2. Describe how a concern moves from being raised to a final decision
  3. Know what to do, and what not to do, in the first days after being contacted
  4. Identify who can actually help you, and what each person’s role actually is
  5. Understand the realistic range of outcomes, not just the worst-case scenario
  6. Recognise the emotional toll this process takes, and what actually helps

Who this course is for

This course is for all UK registered healthcare professionals across the eight regulators. It is essential if you have just been contacted about a concern and do not know what to expect. It is equally valuable if nothing has happened yet and you simply want to understand the system that governs your career, so that if a concern is ever raised, you are not starting from zero.

Related courses in this seriesThis course is self-contained and needs no other. Once you understand the landscape, the rest of the CrownEthics Fitness to Practise series teaches the specific skills a regulator actually looks for: Insight, Reflection, Remediation, Prevention, and handling or avoiding Complaints. None is required to complete this one, but this course is the natural place to start if you are new to the whole subject.

Important, please readThis course is educational. It is not legal advice and does not replace representation. If a concern has been raised about you, contact your defence organisation, trade union, or a specialist solicitor at the earliest opportunity. This course helps you understand the system and feel less lost within it. Your defence organisation advises you on your specific case. You need both.
